From Jay-Z to Young Buck: Rap Lyrics That State the Obvious

Hip-Hop has given us some of the most intricate, dexterous and creative lyrical wizardy in the history of music. Rappers deal mostly (but not exclusively) in verbiage, so lyrical prowess holds a lot of weight. Titans like Andre 3000, Rakim, Kendrick Lamar, Black Thought, Slick Rick, Jean Grae and so many more have pushed the art of lyricism to exciting places. No doubt.

But the truth is, even some of the greatest lyricists of all time sometimes can be guilty of stating the obvious. The easy retort is "obvious to whom?", but believe us when we say certain emcees seem to believe their audience doesn't comprehend basic things.

Here are some funny examples...

"My Philosophy" - Boogie Down Productions (KRS-One)

"A vegetarian: No goat or ham or chicken or turkey or hamburger..."

We all know what a "vegetarian" is, Kris. We get it: no meat. Vegetarian. Got it.

"Big Pimpin'" - Jay-Z

"I got no patience. And I hate waiting."

Jay-Z might be impatient but he has plenty of time for redundancy.

"Bang Bang" - Young Buck

"Just think if I ain't empty the clip and he killed me/Would I still be living?"

Is this philosophical? Is it metaphysical? What kinda question is this? It feels like a trick.

"Hail Mary" - 2Pac w/The Outlawz (Young Noble)

"Cause word is bond -- when I was broke I had to hustle 'til dawn
That's when sun came up..."

Is that when the sun comes up?! Gotcha.

"Temperature" - Tyga

"Girl, you're hot and cold. That makes you warm."

Tyga coming with the deep thoughts and scathing criticism of his lady. Yes, that is how you get to "warm."

"Renee" - Lost Boyz (Mr. Cheeks)

"She told me what she was in school for
She wants to be a lawyer, in other words, shorty studies law..."

In case you were kinda confused about what "lawyer" means...
