DJ Premier Gives The Backstory of "Return of the Crooklyn Dodgers"

On the latest episode of “So Wassup?” DJ Premier tells the story of his classic song “Return of the Crooklyn Dodgers” from the soundtrack of Spike Lee’s 1995 film Clockers

Spike Lee recruited Preemo for the production of the track along with Jeru The Damaja. O.C., and Chubb Rock to spit on the single. Lee felt like the ensemble was the perfect group to represent his hometown of Brooklyn as they were the borough’s hottest acts at the time. Preem expressed his appreciation for Chubb Rock’s energy and personality for bringing life to the studio during the track’s production. “[Chubb Rock} is very funny and witty.”

While making the track, Bob Marley’s “Easy Skanking” caught the attention of DJ Premier as the bells went perfectly with the drums that the producer laid down for the track. Preemo wanted to match the theme and vibe of the film as much as possible, creating a somber melancholy sound for the track. “Since we just saw the film, I just thought about sadness and what really goes on in the neighborhood .”
