Big Pun Honored With Bronx Street Naming

The late Big Punisher received a big honor in his home borough. An intersection in the Bronx was co-named after the legendary lyricist.

The intersection of Fordham Road and Grand Concourse was rechristened for the late Big Pun; city officials have officially renamed the intersection "Big Pun Plaza."

"In his short life, Big Pun was a tremendous contributor to the vibrant cultural life of the Bronx," City Councilman Fernando Cabrera said of the rapper born Christopher Rios. "I am proud to memorialize and honor Big Pun by co-naming this intersection Big Pun Plaza."

With the success of his debut album, Capital Punishment, Pun was the first solo Latino rapper to achieve a platinum album. He died in 2000 of a heart attack at the age of 28. Cabrera credited Pun's family for the push to honor the Hip-Hop legend.

"You guys are champions, you made it happen," Cabrera said. "You came to us, and you said, 'This has to happen in the Bronx,' and it had to happen in the most famous, the most important intersection in the entire Bronx."
